student awarded prestigious $25,000 Merck Scholarship
For the third time in six years,
a CSUSB student has been awarded a highly competitive $25,000 Merck
Scholarship. Dwain McConnell, a chemistry/biochemistry and chemical engineering
major, is one of only 15 undergraduates nationwide to receive the 2005
scholarship. He applied for the award while working in the university’s McNair
Scholars Program, which encourages students to pursue doctoral degrees.

Palm
Desert Campus to receive $1 million from City of La Quinta for new health
science complex
La Quinta’s City Council voted
unanimously to approve a $1 million contribution toward the construction of a
health science facility at Cal State’s Palm Desert Campus. The building, which
will house nursing education programs, classrooms and labs, will complete the
first phase of the permanent campus on Cook Street and Frank Sinatra Drive.

University to offer
master's degree in public health
The department of health science
and human ecology will offer a new master’s degree program in public health
starting this fall.
The two-year
M.P.H. program is designed for health professionals to further their careers in
public, private and community-based health care organizations. Applications for
fall 2006 are invited beginning November 1, 2005 and closing February 1, 2006.

Rob Mink qualifies for US Amateur Golf Championship
Robert Mink,
CSUSB Alumni Association Alumni Scholar and three-year veteran of the Cal
State San Bernardino men's golf team, qualified for this weekend's US Amateur
Golf Championship. Mink, a senior and an all-CCAA first team selection this past
season, was one of three qualifiers for golf's No. 1 amateur tournament, held
this year at at Goose Creek Golf Club near Riverside. Read the full story... |

New BIO2MED program helps get students
into med school
Up to six qualified CSUSB
biology students each year will be assured admission to the osteopathic medical
school at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, thanks to an
agreement between Cal State and Western University. President Karnig praised
the articulation agreement for its reaching and mentoring lower division
students to help them into medical school.

Back
to College Night in D.C.
The Alumni
Association invites CSUSB alumni in the Washington, D.C. area to join us for
“Back to College Night” on Capitol Hill September 28. Hosted by the California
State Society, the event celebrates California’s institutions of higher
education and brings together CSU and UC alumni with members of the California
Congressional delegation and other Californians living and working in the D.C.
area.

Perkins’
attract $100,000 for scholarships at Lake Arrowhead estate fundraiser
University Advisory Board member
Neale Perkins and his wife, Patricia, opened their expansive Lake Arrowhead
French Normandy home this summer to raise money for scholarships. In one night,
the Perkins’ and their 225 guests raised nearly $100,000 for scholarships for
people living in the mountain communities above the CSUSB campus who plan to
attend the university.

Luis Portillo '03
and
Philip Southard '03
Luis Portillo,
B.S. info management 2003, TKE, and Philip Southard,
B.A criminal justice 2003, are constituent affairs representatives for
educational issues in Gov. Schwarzenegger's Sacramento office. Their
responsibilities include direct correspondence with constituents and resolution
of district issues.
Luis joined the Governor's staff in
mid-February, previously holding a legislative aide position with Senator Roy
Ashburn (R) in California's 18th district. While attending CSUSB, Louis
served as ASI president for two years (2000-01, 2001-02).
Philip joined the Governor's staff in
November, after
working in Senator Jim Brulte's (R) district office in Rancho Cucamonga.
...Louis and Philip did not know
each other while CSUSB students!
