For the second straight year,
CSUSB was ranked in the top half of 122 colleges and universities that received
the “Best in the West” designation by the Princeton
Review, which surveyed over 110,000 students for the annual list. CSUSB was one
of only 40 California universities on the list.

In addition, U.S. News
& World Report ranked Cal State San Bernardino among the best universities
offering master’s degrees in the West in its annual “America’s Best Colleges
Guide.” There were 572 universities ranked in this category that were separated
by geographic regions. |

starts new academic year and 40th anniversary celebration with president's
Convocation
Cal State San Bernardino
President Albert Karnig launched on Monday, Sept. 19, the university's year-long
40th Anniversary celebration with the annual Convocation ceremonies,
honoring staff and faculty achievements and outlining challenges and priorities
in the year ahead.
Karnig, now entering his ninth year as the university's president, highlighted
Cal State San Bernardino's achievements of the past year and addressed the
university's major priorities, including budget and enrollment issues, how the
university will help students affected by Hurricane Katrina, and celebration
plans for the university's 40th anniversary. Read

opens doors to Katrina-displaced students, offers free housing
Students displaced by
Hurricane Katrina who have enrolled at CSUSB or are planning on registering
at the university for the fall quarter will receive free housing for the
2005-2006 academic year.

Cal State San
Bernardino attracts 68 top local scholars
Focusing on the top 1 percent of
high school seniors, CSUSB President Albert Karnig initiated the President's
Academic Excellence Scholarship (PAES) award in 2002. Three years later,
there are now 68 PAES recipients enrolled at Cal State San Bernardino, including
32 new students representing the highest achievers of the Class of 2005 at local
high schools.

CSUSB
to offer education doctorate program in Fall 2007
Gov. Schwarzenegger last week signed
legislation that authorizes California State University, including its San
Bernardino campus, to begin offering a doctoral degree in education. Cal State
San Bernardino plans to be among the campuses that will offer the degree
beginning in fall 2007.

Women's
volleyball team risks No. 2 national ranking in key match vs. Cal Poly
Pomona this weekend
Cal State San Bernardino (11-2)
will risk its No. 2 national ranking and its 5-0 CCAA record Friday night
when it hosts an unbeaten Cal Poly Pomona team (14-0, 6-0 CCAA) that is off to
the best start in the history of the Broncos program. At stake is first place
in the CCAA and a leg up on the loser when the NCAA begins posting regional
rankings next month.

hires former star as new Coyotes tennis coach
Heather Lehman '04, the most successful tennis player in the
history of the Cal State San Bernardino women's program, has been appointed head
coach of the Coyotes team for 2005-06. Lehman replaces her mentor, Tom Starzyk,
who resigned after coaching the team for the past seven seasons.

alumni artists featured in "Coming Home: Art Alumni Exhibition," opening
reception this weekend
The work of Cal State San
Bernardino studio arts alumni is now on display at “Coming Home: Art Alumni
Exhibition,” a special fall exhibition in honor of the university’s 40th
anniversary. The exhibit will run through Dec. 10 at the Robert V. Fullerton
Art Museum at Cal State San Bernardino.
The alumni exhibit, which has
some 100 pieces of artwork, includes traditional and contemporary approaches to
painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, glass, photography and printmaking, as
well as installation and the digital arts.

The CSUSB Alumni Association has launched a redesigned website to help reconnect
CSUSB alumni during the university's 40th anniversary.
Registered users may update their alumni record, search for
friends and former classmates through an Alumni Directory, find
and register for 40th anniversary events in the Activities Calendar,
use the expanded Career Connection to promote your business or
network with other CSUSB alumni, or even post your own Class Note.

Ramiro
Porras Jr. '00
Ramiro Porras
Jr. has been named to coordinate the activities of more than
50 colleges and universities in Southern California that have been designated
Hispanic Serving Institutions by the federal government. He will be based
on-campus at CSUSB, working under Tom Rivera, associate dean of undergraduate
studies.
Porras, a 2000 liberal studies graduate
of CSUSB, has worked at the university since August 2004 as an early outreach
coordinator, designing various programs to reach students in more than 40 area
middle and high schools and community colleges. Porras also worked
(2000-2004) as an admissions counselor and Project UPBEAT coordinator for CSUSB,
presenting workshops for parents, students and professionals regarding
college admissions, especially for first-time students and their families. |
