CSUSB’s Office of Student Leadership and
Development coordinated a university-wide drive to collect packets of Ramen
Noodles to donate to the San Bernardino City Mission.
The successful drive
brought in 27,422 packets, which will go into holiday baskets for needy people
at Thanksgiving and Christmas. |

CSUSB salutes brightest local high school students
Over 200 of the county's top
high school seniors were recognized for their academic excellence by the
university at a November 15 ceremony in Coussoulis Arena. The students, all
ranked in the top one percent of their class, were invited to attend CSUSB in
the fall as President's Academic Excellence Scholars, making each eligible to
receive a four-year $20,000 scholarship. The university currently enrolls 68
President's Scholars.
Dr. Nerissa Concepcion Safie (B.S. biochemistry 1996) was the
keynote speaker for the evening, sharing her CSUSB experience and life after Cal
State. Nerissa graduated from Harvard Medical School, completed her residency at
Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, and now is in private practice in obstetrics and
gynecology in Temecula.

Ancient
mammoth fossil arrives at CSUSB
CSUSB students will have the
opportunity to clean, examine and prepare for exhibit an ancient mammoth fossil,
discovered at an Irvine construction site this past summer. Cal State San
Bernardino students were among the team of archaeologists and paleontologists
who excavated the specimen, which is about 30 percent complete, making it a rare
find. The students will work under the direction of biology professor
Stuart
Sumida.

Admissions open for Winter, Spring and Fall quarters
Students who may have missed the start of classes in September can still apply
to attend winter and spring quarters. The winter 2006 term begins January 7.
Prospective students wanting to enroll for fall 2006 are advised to submit their
admission applications by November 30 to qualify for the priority application
period and increase their chances of being admitted to the university in the new
academic year. Apply online by logging onto

charitable giving
Take advantage of recent
temporary changes to tax laws regarding charitable donations. The Katrina Tax
Relief Act removes deduction limits on cash gifts made to charitable
organizations through December 31, 2005 and may dramatically reduce a
contributor’s taxable income. For information on making gifts to CSUSB under
the Katrina Tax Relief Act, contact the Office of Development at (909) 537-5005.

distinguished alumni and friends
Alumni and friends joined Presidents Pfau, Evans
and Karnig on November 5 for an historic 40th Anniversary salute to this year's
Alumni Awards of Distinction honorees.
Distinguished Alumni Awards, presented to former
students who have achieved exceptional professional success, were given to
Gerry Fawcett (B.A. administration 1974), Jean Stephens
(M.B.A. 1991) and Jeff Shockey (B.A. political science 1988, M.P.A.
1994). Antreen Pfau and Lois Evans, the spouses of CSUSB's former
presidents, received President's Awards for their exemplary service to the
university, and the Legacy Award, recognizing a family for its sustained
commitment to and support of CSUSB, went to the Nicholas and Christina
Coussoulis Family.

Pope
family honored for support of Coyote Athletics
At the November 4 women's
volleyball match, Coyote Athletics paid tribute to the Pope Family for their
contributions to intercollegiate athletics in general and volleyball in
particular. The late LeRoy Pope, grandfather of former CSUSB all-American setter
Amy Pope Schumacher (B.S. accounting 2002), attended every home
match his granddaughter played during her four years at CSUSB. Amy, a CPA with
McGladrey & Pullen, serves on the Coyote Athletics Association Board of
Directors.

dean visits alumni in Taiwan
About 25 alumni in Taipei gathered to meet with College of Business and Public
Administration Dean Karen Dill Bowerman on her recent trip to
Taiwan. Joined by Associate Dean Otto Chang, Dean Bowerman attended the
Knowledge-Based Economy and Global Education conference and also visited several
Taiwanese universities interested in developing or expanding relationships with
the college for faculty and student exchanges.

Coyote Classic nets $100,000 for athletic scholarships
A field of 160 golfers
participated in the 10th annual Dave Stockton Coyote Classic on
November 9 and the winners were CSUSB’s present and future student-athletes.
The tournament, which was held at PGA of Southern California in Beaumont, netted
$100,000 for the Coyote Athletic Association’s student-athlete scholarship fund.

Men's basketball wins season opener, loses tournament
title game
The Coyote men’s basketball regular season tipped-off Nov.
18 with the SODEXHO Tip-Off Classic tournament at Seattle Pacific University.
The hot-shooting Coyotes won their season opener versus Northwest Nazarene
University, 80-56, dropping 11 of 15 three-point shots and advancing to the
tournament final against Seattle Pacific University the following day. SPU was
able to hold off a determined Coyotes charge, and the team lost the game, 85-81.

Late charge by Coyotes not
enough in NCAA Volleyball Regionals
CSUSB’s run for a third
consecutive NCAA Division II Pacific Region Volleyball championship ended
Saturday night at Cal State Los Angeles in a hotly contested match. The
Coyotes, who have appeared in the Pacific Region tournament for six straight
years, lost the championship to top-seed Cal State LA, 30-23, 30-22, 24-30,
29-31, 15-8. CSUSB’s Amy Long, Traci Weamer and Shanon Humphrey earned
All-Tournament Team honors.

Sundip Doshi
'90
Sundip Doshi (B.S. computer science 1990)
was featured on the cover of Inland Empire Magazine's October 2005 issue. He's
among 20 local "go-getters" under the age of 40 whom the publication identified
as people "blazing new trails in the region." Sundip is the CEO of
Surado Solutions, Inc., a
Riverside-based company that specializes in customer relations management
software for clients in over 65 countries.
Sundip, who serves on the advisory board
for CSUSB's Inland Empire Center for Entrepreneurship, comes from a family of
