Coyote men’s
basketball scored its sixth consecutive conference championship, a first in the
66-year history of the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Seniors Trenell
Eddings (men’s basketball) and Sequoia Williams (women’s basketball) earned
first-team all-CCAA honors this season, while five other Coyotes (three men and
two women) earned second team honors in voting by the conference coaches.

English professor Margaret Doane has been named CSUSB’s
Outstanding Professor for 2005. A faculty member since 1976, Doane has
developed 10 courses and created the highly successful English Honors program
and EPIC, an advising center for undergraduate English majors. Doane was
honored in 2002 with the Golden Apple Teaching Award and in 2001 as Outstanding
Advisor.

The Association of Latino Faculty, Staff and Students will
hold its 20th Anniversary Scholarship Banquet on Saturday, May 14,
5:30 p.m., in the Charles and Shelby Obershaw Dining Room. ALFSS will present
over $10,000 in scholarship awards that evening to new and continuing students.
Since 1985, the organization has awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships to
deserving CSUSB students. Former ALFSS scholarship recipients are encouraged to
join in the celebration, which includes dinner and dancing to the music of

Over 20 CSUSB faculty were honored for their published
works during the university’s annual Faculty Book Launch on March 11. Faculty
authors representing an array of academic disciplines and fields displayed their
works, which ranged from textbooks to novels to an interactive multimedia
simulation.

Dr. Carmack
Holmes, director of the Center for Advanced Surgical and Interventional
Technology at UCLA, will be the next speaker in The Distinguished Scholar Series
at CSUSB’s Palm Desert Campus. Dr. Holmes will present April 13 and 14 and will
share the “science fiction in healthcare” that is soon to become a reality. The
Distinguished Scholar Series brings accomplished scholars to the desert to speak
on issues of scientific interest, history, philosophy and the humanities.

William Aguilar named Advancement VP
William Aguilar, CSUSB’s vice president for Information
Resources and Technology since 1992, is the new head of the campus’ division of
University Advancement, which includes the departments of Alumni Affairs,
Development, Advancement Services, Public Affairs and Intercollegiate
Athletics. Among Aguilar’s first duties will be the development of a strategic
plan for advancement and building the infrastructure for university fundraising.

Candace Hunter
Wiest, president and COO of Inland Empire National Bank in Riverside, will be
honored April 5 as CSUSB’s 2005 Arrowhead Distinguished Executive Officer. The
award, bestowed annually by the College of Business and Public Administration,
recognizes honorees’ leadership, civic service and commitment to education.

Val
Limar-Jansen '90 and Frank Jansen '91
Val Limar-Jansen
(B.A. theatre arts 1990) and Frank Jansen (B.A. music 1992) returned to CSUSB to
reprise “Ethel,” the critically acclaimed play celebrating the life of legendary
actress and blues singer Ethel Waters. In 1989 while a student at Cal State,
Val starred in the original production of “Ethel,” which she co-wrote with
Professor William Slout. Proceeds from the recent performance will benefit the
Ronald E. Barnes Theatre Endowment, which provides scholarships for deserving
theatre arts students.
Val sings and tours
professionally throughout the U.S. and abroad, and she is completing her
doctorate in dramatic arts at UC Santa Barbara. Frank, a professional musician
for over 30 years, is a highly regarded pianist, keyboard player and
