Coyote men's basketball No. 1 in West Region, No. 8 in nation

If you’re looking for the hottest teams in the NCAA Division II ranks, look to the west.

Two seasons ago, Cal State San Bernardino and Metropolitan State (Denver, CO) hooked up in an Elite Eight game in Evansville, IN.  The teams also played back in November, with Metro State winning that game as it did in the 2002 Elite Eight.  But the way things are going right now, these two might hook up again in Bakersfield next month for the Elite Eight National Championships.

Cal State San Bernardino, ranked No. 1 in the West Region and No. 8 nationally, has a 19-game winning streak heading into this Friday’s game against Sonoma State at Coussoulis Arena.  The Metro State Roadrunners also have been hot, with a 19-game winning streak and a No. 2 national ranking.

Balanced scoring and solid defense have been the keys to San Bernardino’s success, as four players are averaging in double figures for a team that is winning by an average of more than 14 points per game.  Metro State’s defensive efforts have been just as good, as opponents are only denting it for just over 60 a game...read the complete story.

Passage of Prop 55 will fund College of Education building

Proposition 55, the statewide school repair and construction bond which will be on the March 2 ballot, will create a $12.3 billion bond, allocating $10 billion to K-12 schools, $920 million for community colleges and $690 million each to the California State University and the University of California systems.

Formally known as the Kindergarten-University Public Education Facilities Bond Act, Prop 55 will address more than 300 vitally needed school repair projects statewide such as the new classroom construction, the repair and renovations of existing school facilities, seismic upgrades and adding high-tech equipment to reduce crowding and accommodate student enrollments in California's public schools and universities.

For Cal State San Bernardino, Prop 55 will fund a $48.6 million state-of-the-art College of Education building, $2.5 million in equipment for the new Science Annex, $1.3 million in equipment for the Science building and $1.3 million in equipment for the second building of the Palm Desert Campus...read the complete story.

Visiting Fulbright Professor from Middle East

Cal State San Bernardino will be the only university in the state to host a visiting Fulbright Scholar through a new program designed to enable American colleges and universities to enrich their international programs and courses of study.   For six weeks this spring, CSUSB will host Qustandi Shomali, a professor in the Arabic department of Bethlehem University and visiting Fulbright Scholar who brings with him a vast expertise and knowledge of the Middle East.

CSUSB has taken a leading role in studying and understanding the Middle East and now is one of the few CSU campuses teaching the Arabic language.  It soon will be the only campus offering studies in the Turkish language.   During the 2003-2004 academic year, the university hosted two international symposisums on issues of the Middle East:  one in November with faculty and dignitaries from Gazi University in Turkey and the other in January with visitors from King Saud University in Saudi Arabia...read the complete story.
