Pioneer Alumni return to campus for reunion

“On windy days, we had to form human chains to cross from one building to another,” recalled Oscar Gonzalez (BA sociology 1971) about his days at Cal State.  Oscar and other alumni from the first five graduating classes—’67 through ’71—returned to campus December 12 and 13 for reunion activities and to welcome the Class of 2003 into the alumni family at the mid-year Commencement ceremonies.

The weekend began with a Welcome Reception in the Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum, where “Pioneer” Alumni reconnected with one another and with founding President John Pfau and his wife, Antreen.  Pioneer Alumni also had the opportunity to see some of their former professors and other original faculty and staff.  The reception included a power point presentation, featuring images from Cal State’s earliest days, and a short film made in 1969 by Dr. Ken Mantei (chemistry), which showed a panoramic view of a stark campus with few buildings.

The following day Pioneer Alumni enjoyed visiting old haunts during campus tours, conducted by Student Ambassadors.  The tours included stops at the campus’ original three buildings, where alumni posed for photos by the first tree planted on the campus and by the original flag pole, where in 1967 the first graduating class buried a time capsule...read the complete story.

Firefighters' efforts acknowledged, scholarship created

Cal State San Bernardino and the County of San Bernardino hosted a tribute to the firefighters, law enforcement personnel and other heroes from the recent Grand Prix and Old Waterman Canyon fires on Sunday, December 14.   The salute was in recognition to those brave and selfless individuals who risked their lives during the October fires.

Firefighters, law enforcement personnel and others who participated in the efforts to battle the fires were encouraged to attend and be recognized. Families of the heroes as well as residents throughout the region also were invited to come out to Cal State and show their support. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, congressmen Jerry Lewis and Joe Baca, and other national, state, county and local officials were invited to participate in the ceremonies.

Cal State San Bernardino also has created a special scholarship fund for firefighters and law enforcement personnel involved with the fires. The Firefighters and Law Enforcement Personnel Scholarship will be available to eligible firefighters, emergency workers and their families...read the complete story.

CSUSB selected to host regional theatre festival

The Region VIII Kennedy Center-American College Theatre Festival has selected Cal State San Bernardino as the site for the renowned program’s 2004 event. Scheduled for Feb. 10-15, 2004, the festival will bring to town more than 1,000 students and visitors from throughout the western United States.

When Region VIII officials considered the university as a possible festival site, they expressed concern about the smaller theatre facilities at Cal State. But KC-ACTF became much more interested after the university’s theatre department proposed involving the community of San Bernardino. Over the past couple of years the Region VIII board has made the effort to broaden the students’ experience and the appeal of the festival itself.

“When you take the festival off-campus you bring an honesty to the shows that’s hard to duplicate on a campus,” said Ken Gray, chair for Region VIII. “So if we can get out into the community and have an audience that is not just the parents or an audience that will come in thinking, ‘Oh, we have to be gentle on these students, these are just college students,’ then students get a better sense of the quality of their performance”...read the complete story.

Lady 'Yotes finish championship volleyball season

Concordia University-St. Paul stepped up when it mattered most Friday night to advance to the NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball championship match with a hard-fought 3-2 decision over host Cal State San Bernardino.

Down 2-1, the Golden Bears won game four 30-25 and then broke a 9-9 tie in the pivotal game five for a 15-10 result and a berth in the title game in their first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament since moving to Division II in 1999.

The Coyotes, ranked No. 1 in the nation and coming off a 3-1 victory over No. 2 University of Tampa in the semifinals put the Golden Bears away 30-20 in game one but turnabout was fair play as Concordia won game two 30-25. CSUSB again dominated in game three with a runaway 30-19 victory. The Golden Bears didn't lose their poise and rebounded to take the final two games
