the nation during the fall 2005 quarter—3.86 out of 4.00.

Santos Manuel Student Union set to open at Cal State San Bernardino
After nearly two years of construction and
renovation, the all-new Santos Manuel Student Union at Cal State San Bernardino
will officially re-open on Thursday, April 6, with special ceremonies and
ribbon cutting beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Literacy program expands services to help young
people in probation programs
A recently added
program to the Literacy Program at Cal State San Bernardino's College of
Education will focus on diagnosing the literacy needs of 30 young people between
the ages of 14-18 who are in San Bernardino County Probation Department
programs.

The Desert Healthcare District
in the Coachella Valley has awarded CSUSB’s Palm Desert Campus a second $1
million grant for construction of a health sciences building.

Anniversary Gala seeks volunteers
As Cal State San
Bernardino celebrates its 40th anniversary with a black tie
gala, alumni may assist their alma mater by serving as volunteers to help greet
and seat guests, and provide support for the university’s silent and live
auctions. Orientation sessions will be held during the week of May 1
(dates/times to be announced) and on Saturday, May 6, the date of the event.

Beeman named CSUSB’s first ombudsperson
Chani Beeman (B.A. psychology 1987) was selected as the
university’s first director of ombuds services, a position created to facilitate
open communication and understanding between individuals and campus groups.

Coyotes at the Capitol
Cal State San Bernardino alumni joined campus
representatives and other CSU alumni in the Sacramento area on March 20 for the
2006 CSU Alumni Networking Night at the Sacramento Convention
Center. Alumni met our California legislators, networked with other CSU alumni
in the Sacramento area, and heard from President Al Karnig about recent
developments at CSUSB.

Association to honor
former student leaders during 40th anniversary
Former student leaders who
served as officers in Associated Students, the Student Union Board of Directors,
and student organizations will be honored on Saturday, May 6, at a tribute
brunch. The event is intended to showcase the new Santos Manuel Student Union
and recognize the unique contributions of alumni who served in key student
leadership positions over the university’s 40-year history. For more

The CSUSB Alumni Association is looking for volunteers to assist the
university in a variety of ways, from helping to recruit students to CSUSB to
pitching in with the university's commencement ceremonies in June. Other
opportunities for alumni to get involved in campus activities include Grad Days
2006, the university's 40th anniversary gala, and more.

team to state championship
Coach Laura Beeman (B.A.
marketing 1992), lead her Mt. San Antonio Community College basketball team to
its second state championship in the 2005-2006 California Community College
State Women’s Basketball Championship.

alumnus named interim men’s golf coach
Tom Mainez, Jr. (B.S. physical education 1995) was appointed interim head coach
of the Coyotes’ men’s golf team for the 2005-06 season. He takes over for Dr.
Greg Price, who started the program at CSUSB in 1985-96.

Fawcett '74
Gerry
Fawcett (B.A. adminstration 1972), past president of Kaiser Ventures LLC and
currently vice chairman of the company's board, was named an
Executive-In-Residence for the College of Business and Public Administration.
Fawcett
has served as treasurer and president of Cal State San Bernardino’s Alumni
Association and was honored by the association at its Distinguished Alumni
Awards for 2005.

As
“Executive-in-Residence,” Fawcett will meet with students, faculty and staff to
discuss business careers, business ethics and his own business experiences. He
has been meeting this year with small groups of students over lunch in a
discussion series he calls “Experience Meets Tomorrow’s Executives.”
Fawcett
will lecture on Wednesday, April 5, from 1-3 p.m. on his experiences, his life
story and insights into business success.
