Biology associate professor Gerald Thrush
was named the 2006 Golden Apple Teaching Excellence award winner at CSUSB. Dr.
Thrush, who has taught graduate and undergraduate biology classes at the
university for 10 years, received student evaluations of 3.9 (out of a possible
4.0) across all of his courses.

Chinese
students learn English at CSUSB, basketball from NBA all-star
Former Los Angeles Laker
Vlade Divac is teaming up with Cal State SB to help visiting students
from China learn to speak English and play basketball. The middle and high
school students took morning American Culture and Language classes through the
College of Extended Learning earlier this month, then spent each afternoon at a
basketball clinic hosted by the Vlade Divac Group Seven Children’s Foundation.

instructor Paul Dixon named CSUSB 'Outstanding Professor'
Physics professor Paul Dixon is
CSUSB’s Outstanding Professor for 2006. Dr. Dixon learned of the honor
in a surprise “ambush” by President Karnig and former award winners during a
class he was teaching last Thursday. Dr. Dixon, who teaches in all areas of
physics and consistently receives excellent student evaluations, holds two U.S.
patents with fellow professor, Tim Usher.

40th
anniversary black-tie gala set for May 6
Members of the CSUSB family
are invited to join the university in celebrating “A Legacy of Pride and
Promise” at a 40th anniversary black-tie gala on May 6 in the newly
opened Santos Manuel Student Union. The celebration will include live and
silent auctions, a gourmet dinner, music and dancing, and a video that
chronicles the history of the campus and the people who made it all happen.

mourns loss of founding faculty member Ron Barnes
Dr. Ronald E.
Barnes, one of Cal State San Bernardino’s original 13 faculty members and
founding chair of the theatre arts department, passed away on February 7. Known
for the classic plays that he directed on campus over the years, Dr. Barnes
helped to design the University Theatre, which opened on campus in 1972.
Thirty-two years later, the facility was dedicated in his honor as the Ronald E.
Barnes Theatre. Dr. Barnes is survived by his wife Mary.

Local kids study
virtually with scientists at Hawaiian volcano
Almost 3,400 fourth- to ninth-grade Coachella Valley
students had the chance to interact via satellite with real scientists
conducting research in Hawaii and other parts of the world, thanks to the fourth
annual JASON Project hosted at the university’s Palm Desert Campus earlier this
month. The JASON Project was founded in 1989 by Robert Ballard, the discoverer
of the wreckage of the Titanic, as a way of making science more interesting and
meaningful to students throughout the nation.

brunch. The event is intended to showcase the new Santos Manuel Student Union
and recognize the unique contributions of alumni who served in key student

EOP alumni cheer on formation
of new chapter, Coyote men’s basketball
Former students from the
Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) returned to campus February 3 for
an evening of reminiscing and exciting Coyote basketball and to launch the newly
established EOP Alumni Chapter. The organization, which was formed by a group
of former EOP students and program staff, is recognized as an official CSUSB
Alumni Association chapter and exists to engage EOP alumni in providing
encouragement and support to today’s EOP students.

for $12,000 four-year scholarship
The CSUSB Alumni Association is seeking its next Alumni
Scholar. The Association will offer a $12,000 four-year scholarship to a
graduating high school senior from the Inland Empire who will be attending CSUSB
in the Fall 2006 quarter and who demonstrates outstanding achievement,
leadership and community service. Qualified students are encouraged to submit
their applications no later than March 2, 2006 using the Financial Aid online
application process at
http://finaid.csusb.edu. Alumni Scholars awards are made possible by
Association membership dues and private contributions. Gifts may be made online

Cal State San Bernardino senior point guard Tamara Thomas and junior
forward Moses Gonzalez on Monday were honored by the Coyote Athletic Association
as the CAA’s Male and Female Athlete of the Month at the organization’s monthly
luncheon.

Athletics Celebrates 10-year Anniversary of Coussoulis Arena
Cal State San Bernardino Athletics marked the 10-year
anniversary of the James and Aerianthi Coussoulis Arena with a dinner February 4
honoring Nick (B.A. geography ’75) and Christina Coussoulis, as well as other
founding donors to the Coyote Athletics program. Nick and Tina’s lead gift to
the Athletics program led to the naming of the 4,100-seat arena after Nick’s
parents.

Rob
Becerra '98
Rob Becerra (B.S. kinesiology 1998) is the
new assistant soccer coach for Stanford University.
For the
past eight years, Rob was head coach for University of Redlands men’s soccer,
where his teams compiled a 126-28-7 record and made five NCAA post-season
appearances, including a trip to the Division III National Championship game. He
also is a member of the Region IV (west region) Olympic Development Program,
training and evaluating both field players and goalkeepers. Rob was the
Coyote men's soccer goalkeeper for the 1993-1996 seasons. |
