Thanks to a $300,000
gift from Watson and Associates, a Seal Beach-based development company, CSUSB
students are working with the city of San Bernardino to bring art to the
public. Ten brightly painted concrete spheres are scattered along the walkways
near City Hall, the first in a series of new public art projects. Cal
State student artists also are at work on a sculpture and fountain that are
planned for a shopping center near the university. |

CSUSB has a
new phone number!
Now you can reach
the Alumni Office by dialing

Pres. Evans challenges
December grads to begin a new era of activism
Addressing over 400 graduates in Coussoulis Arena at the
December 10 morning commencement ceremony, CSUSB’s former president, Anthony H.
Evans, encouraged the Class of 2005 to “become part of a new activism for the
new century, one that addresses the nation’s challenges one by one.” Recalling
his own generation’s activism when he was a UC Berkeley student in the 1960s,
Cal State SB’s second president said, “Students like you helped change
America.” Judith Rymer, professor of education and former vice president for
university relations, spoke at the afternoon commencement ceremony. Nearly 900
students total participated in the mid-year graduation exercises.

Paleontology prof helps
animators create mythical creatures
Biology and paleontology professor Stuart Sumida, a consultant for animation and
effects-driven movies, lent his expertise to Walt Disney’s recently released
“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.” Sumida has
consulted on dozens of films over the past 14 years, working closely with
special-effects engineers to design realistic creatures for animated movies,
such as “The Lion King” and “Shrek 2.” Sumida says that working with the
studios has made him a better instructor and has allowed him access to some of
the best teaching tools in academia.

Breaking news for yearend
charitable giving
Recent temporary changes to tax laws regarding charitable
donations following Hurricane Katrina could benefit those who donate to
philanthropic organizations, including Cal State San Bernardino. The Katrina
Tax Relief Act removes deduction limits on cash gifts to charitable
organizations through December 31, 2005. Earlier this fall, CSUSB admitted 15
students displaced by Hurricane Katrina, including several students from
California who had planned on attending colleges in the affected Gulf Coast
region. Six of the students currently are receiving free on-campus housing and
meals during the 2005-06 academic year.
