CSUSB’s Model Arab League student delegation earned “Outstanding
Delegation” distinction at the 2004 Model League of Arab States
competition.
The
Outstanding Delegation honor is the highest award given at the competition,
which brings teams from universities throughout the
Western United States

CSUSB
receives WASC 10-year accreditation
The Western
Association of Schools and Colleges has renewed the accreditation of
California
State
University
,
San Bernardino
praising it as a “dynamic institution” that “is responding boldly
to the demographic shifts in its region.
Cal State San
Bernardino is “a plethora of initiatives and a ‘culture of
evidence’ that have been nurtured to evaluate them. This energy and a
willingness to review results pervade the academic, cocurricular, and
administrative sectors of the University,” wrote WASC executive director Ralph
A. Wolff in a letter to CSUSB President Albert Karnig.
Wolf added
that the university has received a high rating as one of the
Inland Empire
’s best places to work “in part because of its attention to the cycle of

Academy
Award Nominee to speak on
“The
Science and Art of Special Effects”
Tom Martinek,
technical director and computer graphics supervisor for Industrial Light &
Magic, a Lucasfilm Company, will be the featured speaker April 9 in the
Department of Biology Seminar Series. Martinek,
whose feature film credits include Master and Commander:
The Far Side of the World, The Hulk, A.I., Deep Impact, Twister, and The
Lost World: Jurassic Park, will speak on “The Science and Art of
Special Effects” at 3:00 p.m. in Jack Brown Hall’s Anheuser-Busch
Auditorium.
Sponsored in
part by the College of Natural Sciences, the program is family-friendly and
admission is free. There will be a
$1.50 parking charge for those without a valid CSUSB parking permit.

Eberst
receives CSU's first Linton Award
Professor
Richard M. Eberst, director of Community-University Partnerships
(CUP) at Cal
State San Bernardino, has become the first faculty member from the 23-campus
California State University system to be named recipient of the 2004 Ernest A.
Lynton Award for Professional Service and Academic Outreach.
The Lynton
Award is annually presented by the New England
Resource Center
for Higher Education to an educator in the United States
who most effectively and broadly incorporates his or her professional service
and academic outreach into making significant contributions to improving the
overall quality of life and health in the university’s service region...read

Portillo
accepted in California Senate Fellowship
Of the more
than 500 applicants vying for spots in the California Senate Fellowship program,
Luis Portillo, B.S. info management 2003
, is one of only 18 actually selected to take part in the program.
Portillo is currently working in the
Capital
Building
in
Sacramento
under State Senator Roy Ashburn, who represents the 18th district, which
includes northern
San Bernardino
County
. His responsibilities for the California Senate program include helping to
develop legislative proposals, researching and analyzing bills, responding to

Scholarship
fund donors recognized for contributions
Gerry
Fawcett (B.A. administration 1974) and Eric Herbert, representing
Fontana-based West Valley Material Recovery Facility (MRF), were honored March 5
at a ceremony recognizing university scholarship donors.
West Valley MRF, in partnership with Kaiser Ventures, Inc. and Burrtec
Waste Industries, Inc., established a $72,000 scholarship program through the
CSUSB Alumni Association.

Richard
Fehn, B.S. biology 1974, M.S. biology 1978, was chosen CSUSB’s Outstanding
Professor of the Year for 2003-04. A
biology professor at
Cal

since 1983, Dr. Fehn was recognized for his excellence in teaching, service to
the university and community, and mentoring of students.
