Rosencrantz
and Guildenstern Are Dead!
If
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern can just find out what’s up with Hamlet, they
could really score points with the king. But, alas, while not much comes easy
for any of Shakespeare’s characters, they are often funny, and such is the
case in “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead,” which
opens April 16 at CSUSB's Ronald E. Barnes Theater.
Rosencrantz
and Guildenstern, minor characters in “Hamlet,” are major
characters in this play by a master of word play, Tom Stoppard. For
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, the problem is that no one really wants to talk
about Hamlet’s maladies and the two friends are left to relying on their own
observations and reports of performers who are visiting the castle. Meanwhile,
they play word games and coin tricks. But such comedy is just another way for
Stoppard to talk about deeper ideas. In “Rosencrantz,” it’s fate and free
will.
The
play runs April 16, 17, 22, 23 and 24 at 8 p.m. and April 18 and 25 at 2 p.m. in
the Performing Arts Building. General
admission is $10, Alumni Association members and senior citizens
are $8, and students are $5...read
